The English portion of the ACT is the first test of four. The test itself takes over four hours. It is of great importance that you eat breakfast. I would also advise bringing food and bottled water to the testing site. You can't eat during the test, but you get a ten-minute break which is reduced to eight minutes when you consider the time it takes to herd everyone out and back in again. You will not have time to stand in line at a vending machine (assuming there is one), eat, and return to the testing site. You will have time, however, to eat the food you have brought along. I advise wearing a jacket to store your stash of food and drink. I advise against drinking highly caffeinated drinks like Monster or Red Bull.
The English section tests you on the basics of English usage, conventions, and composition. While you will face questions on subject-verb agreement, parallelism, clauses, proper punctuation of clauses, and the power of effective writing, you will not usually face questions on basic capitalization. You will also not find sentences filled with obvious errors. In the ACT English Test, you must recognize and identify the qualities of effective, powerful writing, also known as "composition." Think of the word "composition" as it is used in the music world, a complete work of music composed so that everything fits together, start to finish. Good writing is like this, and that is what the ACT English section is about: Turning bland, flawed writing into more powerful composition.
