shrive -- O.E. scrifan "assign, decree, impose penance," from W.Gmc. *skriban (cf. O.S. scriban, O.Du. scrivan, Du. schrijven "to write;" O.N. skrjpt "penance, confession"), an early borrowing from L. scribere "to write."
The earliest word associated with the word "write" is the Germanic or Old English word shrieve, borrowed from a closely related Latin word, which in ancient history meant to confess one's sins publicly, either to a priest or before church or state officials, usually in writing. From there, the word came to indicate a written confession or the decree proving absolution (forgiveness), and the word for written confession became the word for writing. Do you think the ancients were right to think that writing was a means of confession, to God or maybe to oneself or the universe?
