Impeccable means clean, without sin, i.e., meaning without judging, without gossip, without cursing, without mocking, without bullying, without name-calling, without labeling, without stereotyping, without threats and without hostility either toward those nearby or toward others not present.
2nd Agreement: Don’t Take Anything Personally
Nothing other people do is because of you. It is because of themselves. People have lives, sometimes tough lives. They may not respond to you the way you want. People's responses or actions do not diminish you in any way. What they do is based on what is happening in their lives.
3rd Agreement: Don’t Make Assumptions
The problem with making assumptions is that we believe they are the truth. We could swear they are real. When we act upon them, we are deceived. Assumptions are based on superficial information. Our eyes deceive us all the time. In our world, assumptions pass for truth, but assumptions are based on gossip, a fragile thread that is not factual, let alone truthful. Buying into assumptions causes drama. It's a waste of time. Successful people don't engage in it. They look for evidence. They don't share the "assumption" with seven people before they find out it isn't true.
4th Agreement: Always Do Your Best
The Greeks had a word: arete, meaning excellence. In Athens, the Greeks taught their children to pursue excellence in all things; in other words, doing their best. Ruiz says our best will fluctuate; still we owe our best in everything we do. We never know who is watching. There's an old saying, "Don't burn bridges." You might need a job, a letter of recommendation, a reference to rent an apartment. Doing your best helps you in the long run.
